Thanksgiving is right around the corner with lots of food, friends and Black Friday shopping. This year Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 27th, 2014. There is much to be thankful for around this time of the year. The trees are changing colors, football is in its prime and ugly Christmas sweater parties are only a few weeks away. With the holiday season quickly approaching, and Thanksgiving only one week away, Schottenstein Real Estate Group wants to list out the most popular Thanksgiving customs and also tell you what we are most thankful for.

Food! Everybody loves a delicious meal while spending time with family and friends. We look forward to turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, and finally pumpkin and apple pie with whip cream. Millions of dishes are prepared during Thanksgiving Day and our communities are no different. As much as we love cooking food, our favorite part is sitting down at the table and enjoying a meal with the ones closest to us.

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving Day where it is often known as the beginning of the Christmas season. Major retailers and local storefronts open very early and stay open later than normal hours, all to entice the consumer to visit and purchase items at a discounted price. Promotional sales to kick off the holiday shopping season are the reason why people will camp outside of BestBuy, Target, and even Walmart just to get the latest and greatest products.

Thanksgiving cannot be concluded without an SREG secret recipe. We want to share just with you one of our most favorite recipes for a delicious roasted turkey. We thank everyone and to show our appreciation, we have put together a roasted turkey recipe from The Food Network.

Oven Roasted Turkey

Total Time: 3 hr 50 min

Prep: 50 min

Cook: 3 hr

Yield: 10 servings

Level: Easy

Ingredients

1 tablespoon smoked paprika

1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon dried thyme

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 14 -pound turkey, giblets removed, washed and dried

Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling

Fresh thyme, for garnish

 

 

 

 

 

Directions

Mix the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, dried thyme, 1 tablespoon salt and 1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper in a bowl. Sprinkle some of the spice rub inside the cavity of the turkey. Separate the skin from the breast meat with your fingers, starting at the top of the breast and sliding to the right and left, then working down. Massage some of the rub onto the meat under the skin. Sprinkle the remaining rub on the turkey’s skin. Place the turkey on a sheet tray and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight or up to 24 hours so the flavors can marry.

Set a rack at the lowest position in the oven and preheat to 325 degrees F. Remove the turkey from the refrigerator to bring to room temperature. Tie the legs together and tuck the wing tips under. Place the turkey in a roasting pan. Drizzle the outside of the turkey with a few tablespoons of olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast the turkey about 3 hours, or until a thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh registers 165 degrees F. Transfer the turkey to a platter, cover loosely with foil and let rest 30 minutes before carving.
